Textbook performance by HSC student Smith in Lend Lease Breakers victory

Off-spinner Lauren Smith will start her HSC exams Monday, 13 october 2014. However, on the weekend she produced a Player of the Match performance on debut to help the Lend Lease Breakers to a bonus point victory over the ACT in their first Women’s National Cricket League 50 over game of the season at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Smith finished with the outstanding figures of 4-35 from 10 overs as the ACT were bowled out for 224 in 49.2 overs.

Winning the toss, the ACT were well placed at 3-142 in the 28th over before the 18-year-old from the Central Coast turned the momentum of the game back in favour of the home side.

She started by bowling Rhiannon Dick (19) before removing Rene Farrell for a duck.
A few overs later she claimed the prize scalp of New Zealand all-rounder Nicola Browne (2) before having Lynsey Askew (3) stumped by Alyssa Healy.

Smith also held a difficult catch on the long-on boundary to complete a memorable debut.

Needing 225 runs to win, Rachael Haynes ensured a fast start to the Lend Lease Breakers chase with 36 runs off 38 balls before hitting a full toss from spinner Rhiannon Dick straight to square leg.

Alex Blackwell and Alyssa Healy then combined for an 89 run second wicket stand before Blackwell fell for 42.

Healy went on to record her highest score for NSW in the Women’s National Cricket League, reaching 90 off 95 balls before falling to a sharp catch by Sara McGlashan.

The loss of the opener proved a minor speed bump as Leah Poulton (29no) and Erin Osborne (14no) completed the chase in the 39th over, giving NSW a seven wicket win and an important early season bonus point.

The Lend Lease Breakers and ACT Meteors will meet again on Sunday (October 12) in the third match of their triple header.

This T20 fixture will be played on the Blacktown International Sportspark No.2 Oval starting at 10am. Entry is free.
