The Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder will be on the hunt for their next star when the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup kicks off in October.

The newly established tournament, played from mid-October to early November, sees clubs from Sydney, as well as the ACT, Central Coast, Newcastle and Illawarra, split into two conferences in Sixers and Thunder aligned regions.

A series of double and triple headers will be played at local grounds over two Sundays, with the winner of each conference playing off in the Grand Final at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday 2 November.

Each KFC T20 Big Bash League team has six supplementary spots available on their roster and selections will be crucial given the ability this season to replace International players, as well as long term injured players, from this list.

In addition to the supplementary spots up for grabs, Academy teams from both the Sixers and Thunder conferences will be selected with further development planned throughout the upcoming summer.

Both the Sixers and Thunder will be assessing talent at each of the matches with Sixers General Manager Dom Remond highlighting the pathways program.

“This new T20 tournament represents a very clear pathway for those involved to be part of the Big Bash League,” he said.

“Teams have six places on their supplementary lists and given we’ve required players from this list every season, there’s a good chance we’ll be calling on players again in BBL|04.

“The alignment of clubs to the Thunder and Sixers conferences for the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup will bring some real excitement to the tournament this year,” added Sydney Thunder General Manager Nick Cummins.

“The highly talented cricketers in the Thunder conference will get a chance to show their ability and earn a spot in our Academy team for this coming season with the opportunity to secure a place on our supplementary list or even a contract with the Thunder in future seasons.

“It is a great chance for the teams to nurture the cricketing talent in their local areas”.

Long-time cricket supporter, Kingsgrove Sports, will be the competitions inaugural Major Sponsor with Managing Director Harry Solomons saying, “It is with pleasure that we have taken the opportunity to sponsor the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup.

“More importantly it is also fantastic to see teams such as Illawarra, Newcastle, Central Coast and the ACT introduced into this T20 competition. This enables players from these important cricket districts to play in an elite competition which will assist NSW Cricket on the whole.

“Cricket owes nothing to Kingsgrove Sports but on the other hand Kingsgrove Sports owes everything to cricket and to our wonderful customers. It is great to be part of it.”

The Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup starts on Sunday 12 October with the Grand Final played on Sunday 2 November.
