Sri Lankan Jeevan Mendis joins the Sixers

Sri Lankan all rounder Jeevan Mendis has signed with the Sydney Sixers on the eve of BBL|02.

The 29 year old international, a member of the ODI and T20 Sri Lankan squads, will fly in to Sydney later this week and play the first four games in mangenta.

Mendis, a handy left-handed batsman and right-arm leg spinner, will fill the void left after the withdrawal of Umar Akmal’s contract due to his shortened availability.

“Jeevan has done really well over the last 18 months in the short forms of the game for Sri Lanka,” said head coach Trevor Bayliss.

“He debuted when I was over there as coach but has really cemented his position recently as a batting all rounder. He is great running between the wickets, bowls a little leg spin and is a solid fielder. He will be a great addition to our team.”

Mendis will arrive mid week ahead of the season opener against archrivals the Sydney Thunder on 8 December with the SCG likely to put up the full house sign with tickets selling quickly.

A week later on 16 December they will back up against the Perth Scorchers at the SCG with the final two home games falling on Boxing Day against the Hobart Hurricanes and 9 January against the Melbourne Renegades.

Tickets are available a Ticketek.

Sydney Sixers BBL|02 squad are: Luke Feldman, Brad Haddin, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Josh Lalor, Brett Lee, Michael Lumb, Nic Maddinson, Jeevan Mendis, Ian Moran, Sunil Narine, Stephen O’Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Steve Smith, Daniel Smith, Mitchell Starc, Dominic Thornely, David Warner.
