West Indian T20 star Dwayne Smith has signed on for the Sydney Sixers to play in the KFC T20 Big Bash League for the next two seasons.
Smith, who played for NSW in the original Big Bash tournament, confirmed his signing with the Magenta men from the West Indies where his Caribbean Premier League (CPL) team, the Barbados Tridents, took home the trophy.
His signing comes off the back of some great form in recent T20 tournaments including being the second highest run scorer in the 2014 IPL, scoring 566 runs for the Chennai Super Kings, and fifth highest run scorer in the CPL with 353 runs. With a strike rate over 130 Smith is certain he can set the stands alight at the SCG.
“I’m looking forward to playing the games and I’m sure the players will be raring to win games too so I hope I can just get out there and put my team in good position or win games for them,” said Smith of his impending arrival.
“I’m sure the pitches will play differently to places like the West Indies, India and other places like Bangladesh that I’ve played before so I’m raring to get over there and play for the Sixers.
“I’m going to come and give it my best and hopefully we can see plenty of sixes when it comes my turn to play for the Sixers.”
Sixers Head Coach Trevor Bayliss said his addition further strengthens the Sixers squad.
“Dwayne is a powerful exciting stroke maker at the top of the order,” said Bayliss.
“Since his last stay playing T20 for NSW, Dwayne has made a name for himself in the IPL as the second highest scorer and also hitting the second most number of sixers. He scored 2 centuries in the recently completed Caribbean T20 League and was on the winning team.
“He also bowls some handy medium pace and his fielding is top class.”
Sixers General Manager Dominic Remond added, “West Indians have long been regarded as the great entertainers of world cricket, so we are very excited about Dwayne’s potential to light up the SCG this summer.”
While maintaining the core squad that performed so well in BBL|03, Smith’s signature adds another high performing all-rounder to the Club along with Sean Abbott and Moises Henriques.
