SIXERS TO PLAY BBL|04 TRIAL MATCH IN WOLLONGONG

The Sydney Sixers will head to Wollongong to play a trial match on Tuesday, 16 December, as a precursor to this summer’s KFC T20 Big Bash League season.

In partnership with Destination Wollongong and Illawarra Cricket Club, the Sixers will take their full available squad, including local boys Nic Maddinson and Brett Lee, to play in the match against an Illawarra Invitational XI.

The trial, played at North Dalton Park, will serve as an opportunity for head coach Trevor Bayliss to cast an eye over the squad leading into the first match of the season on Friday, 19 December against the Melbourne Renegades at the SCG.

Sydney Sixers General Manager Dom Remond said the staging of the trial match was a great result for the Club.

“The Illawarra area is a key area of development for us so we are delighted to be able to play a trial match there ahead of a big season at the SCG,” he said.

“We have been very keen to get the team to the region leading in to BBL|04 and this gives us an opportunity to not only visit the community but play a game where the local community can come along free of charge and enjoy the atmosphere.”

Mark Sleigh, General Manager Destination Wollongong, said; “The Sydney Sixers coming to Wollongong is a summer treat and we are excited to be supporting this venture.

“We urge everyone to take in some elite level action in a fun environment. We also applaud the Sixers and Cricket NSW in making this a free event for the community to enjoy and thank Wollongong City Council for its help behind the scenes.

“This match represents another outstanding event Wollongong will host over summer in what promises to be a busy calendar. We’re delighted to be continually growing our major events portfolio, which represents significant exposure and economic impact for the region.”

Mark Johnston, President of Cricket Illawarra, highlighted the positive outcome for cricket in the region to come from the match.

“The Sixers trial game will give the Wollongong public the chance to see international cricketers in a competitive hit-out that will provide a tremendous boost for the promotion of cricket in Illawarra,” said Johnston.

“The game will also provide an opportunity for local players to pit their skills against the Sixers team that includes South Coast product Brett Lee and South Coast/Shoalhaven product Nic Maddinson.

“We’d like to thanks Cricket NSW and Destination Wollongong for their support of this fixture.”

Along with the trial match, the Sixers will hold a coaching clinic for local kids, with details of this to be made public in the coming weeks.

The Sydney Sixers play their first game at the SCG on Friday 19 December against the Melbourne Renegades with the Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers all set to visit Sydney’s best cricket ground over the KFC T20 Big Bash League season.
