The Sydney Sixers have named Shane Cassel and Charles Amini their BBL03 Rookies as the magenta men continue the countdown to the season.

Both rookies come under Cricket Australia’s new KFC T20 Big Bash League rookie initiative where they fund a Community Rookie player and a Development Rookie player for each team.

Cassel, who currently plays first grade for Parramatta, will be the Sixers Development Rookie.

A left arm leggie, he represented Australia in the Under 19’s and will benefit from the opportunity to be around the Sixers set up.

The Development Rookie Contracts are available to players under the age of 21 who are eligible to represent Australia under ICC eligibility rules or are an approved Australian resident.

Amini plays for the national Papua New Guinean cricket team and has just returned from the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Dubai. An all-rounder who looks up to Steve Smith, Amini has been on the road since September playing for the Barras in a number of tournaments across Australia and the world.

Under the rules, the Community Rookie Contracts may comprise of players from rural communities, indigenous backgrounds, low socio-economic areas, and those from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Both Cassel and Amini will not be part of the Sixers squad of 18 players, but can be signed as a replacement player in the event of an injury to a squad member.
The new concept is part of a wider plan to provide opportunities to players who might not otherwise be identified as one of Australian cricket’s pathway programs, with all teams to sign two players.

BBL|03 is now only 17 days away and the final preparations are underway at Sydney’s Party Central, the SCG, as the Sixers work to ‘magentify’ the town.

Four home matches over the course of the school holidays and a ticket price of just $42.50 for a family of four make this year’s Big Bash the hottest and best value ticket in town.

Tickets are on sale now through Ticketek.
