The Sydney Thunder, who have been busy building a squad ready to challenge in BBL|03, have secured a major signing off the field with the announcement that Australian cricketing great Mark Waugh will become the new ‘Governor’ of Thunder Nation.

Waugh, a veteran of 128 Tests and 244 One Day Internationals, is not only one of the best players Australia has produced, but also possesses one of the sharpest cricketing brains around.

His role as the ‘Governor’ of the Thunder will encompass being a mentor to the batsmen in the club, particularly focussing on the younger members of the squad.

‘Junior’ will also become the Number One Ticket Holder, in addition to a number of projects that he will work on in marketing the club to members and fans around Sydney.

Mark, will also be a commentator for Channel Ten during the KFC T20 Big Bash.

Sydney Thunder General Manager Nick Cummins has no doubt what an asset Mark will be to the Thunder: “Mark is one of Australia’s best-ever batsmen. He has pretty much done it all in the game and it is a massive coup to have him on board with the Thunder this season. His experience and understanding of the game will be of great benefit to all our squad and he can play a major role in mentoring our young batsmen’.

Mark was equally excited about linking up with the Thunder: “I am looking forward to being involved with the Thunder this year. The club has made it obvious that they are building for the future. They have made some great signings, including guys like Mike Hussey, who will bring the experience and knowledge of how to play in pressure situations. I look forward to being around the squad and working with some of the younger guys during the course of the season.”

The Thunder start their campaign with the ‘Sydney Smash’ against the Sixers at the SCG on Saturday 21 December.
