The Lend Lease Breakers were pushed all the way to their three wicket victory over a spirited Tasmanian side during their Women’s National Cricket League match at Blacktown International Sportspark today.
Winning the toss and batting, Tasmania lost early wickets and looked to be in a world of trouble as they crawled to 5-56 in the 20th over. However, a fighting 51 runs from 69 balls by Player of the Match, Veronica Pyke, and a run-a-ball 27 from Anita Silva, got the Roar to 9-170 at the end of their 50 overs.
The Lend Lease Breakers made a steady start to the chase with openers Rachael Haynes (46) and Leah Poulton (16) putting on 38 runs for the first wicket in eight overs. However, the flow of runs was not the problem as wickets began to fall at regular intervals.
Alex Blackwell (4), Lisa Sthalekar (5), Alyssa Healy (5) and Erin Osborne (0) were dismissed cheaply and all of a sudden, the defending champions found themselves in a hole at 6-96.
Fortunately, Sarah Coyte held her nerve. The young allrounder scored 34 runs from 64 balls to get her side back on track. When she fell in the 33rd over with the score at 7-130, the baton was passed to rookie, Nicola Carey.
The 19-year-old showed amazing composure at the crease, with her 46 not out from 70 balls proving to be a match winner. She hit the winning runs three balls into the 45th over.
Friday was the Lend Lease Breakers’ fourth win in this competition from as many starts, while Tasmania are yet to open their WNCL account.
