Cricket NSW today announced its RTA SpeedBlitz Blues list of contracted players for the 2011/12 season.

With 10 NSW players recently named in the Cricket Australia Contract list, the 2011/12 RTA Speedblitz Blues list has an excellent mixture of experience and youth. The squad has been significantly strengthened by the return of Simon Katich, who returns to the State list after being unable to secure a Cricket Australia contract.

Also new to the full Contract list is 19 year old left-handed batsman Nic Maddinson, who is upgraded from ‘Rookie’ status. Maddinson had a superb debut season for the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues, becoming the youngest player to score a century on First class debut, with 113 against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, before going on to compile 437 runs at an average of 39.72 in the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield.

The other additions to the squad are a group of three new Rookie Contracts in Sean Abbott (Parramatta), Nic Bills (North Sydney) and Nathan Brain (Campbelltown-Camden).

Abbott (19), who was not contracted last year, forced his way into the senior side through strong Grade and Futures League performances. He finished the season having played four Ryobi Cup, and five KFC Big Bash matches, with his finest hour being 3-15 against Queensland at The Gabba in the Big Bash.

Bills, a 19 year old right-arm pace bowler from North Sydney, trod a similar path to Abbott and has been rewarded with a Rookie contract. Bills, played in one Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia last season, where he picked up 2-93 in the first innings of the match.

Nathan Brain is a 19 year old leg-spin bowler, who put in some consistent performances for NSW in the Futures League last year, in addition to taking 25 First Grade wickets at an average of 34.44.

Departures from the 2010/11 Contract list are Mark Cameron (Western Australia), Peter Forrest (Queensland), Nathan Bracken (retired), Scott Coyte, Daniel Smith, Tim Armstrong, Luke Doran and Joe Mennie (all de-listed).

Cricket NSW Chief Executive David Gilbert is excited about the quality of the squad going into next season.

“Even with 10 NSW players being contracted to Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW has still been able to name a very talented Contract list for 2011/12. The return of Simon Katich to play alongside a group of younger players that are developing rapidly, means that we have the depth and experience to challenge in both forms of the game next year” Gilbert said.
